This is preliminary, but very, very good news if it holds.
Pfizer's vaccine may provide 90% protection. That's huge. That's half the infections of an 80% vaccine and just a quarter of the failures of a 60% vaccine, both of which would be very useful.
We have 11 vaccines in late stage trials, they all got there because they looked safe and effective in stage 2. Pfizer's is looking AMAZING, and the Moderna mRNA vaccine should be easy to ramp up to massive scales. So it's looking like we'll have both - one that can scale rapidly, and one that's extremely effective in case the rapid one is only partially effective.
It's still a long way out, but my optimism for what this time next year looks like keeps getting better.
