Banaue was my home base for my last month in the Philippines and I was able to live like a local somehow. I didn’t travel much in the Banaue area like at the Happao rice terraces, except for the Batad rice terraces which I have blogged about extensively. However, I did eat a lot and tried the restaurants and carinderia (afforfdable local eatery) he

I totally agree with you on supporting the local people. "Guide fights" happen in China too, I found it sad and frustrating to witness.

That's sad, if there's not enough tourists availing their services then it may be better for them to find a different or a supplemental source of income.

Agreed, preferably an honest one haha

That's the kinda place I'd live for a while, just to learn how to build those traditional huts.

Even though I understand that tourism is a good thing for locals, I wish some places in this world would just not become a world heritage or something, after they become popular the massive tourism industry just destroys the vibe. Not the case in this place, as It looks like it's still 'under the radar'.

It's funny that the backpackers that try to do everything for free are most likely to have the money to pay, they go there make content and profit from it. A true broke backpacker would offer labor in exchange or anything basically and would be interested to live among the locals.

Exactly! We don't always need to give back through money, we can offer services or any help for the locals :) A lot of times, locals appreciate this and they are generous to give more than they receive. Or sometimes, they give just because they are happy to see you.
