A classic ride :) Vorden Surprises me every day :)

Yesterday when I was walking our dog I noticed a group of people on very old moped's. When they came near I saw that it were Solex's. A solex is a moped with a little engine above the front wheel. You can cycle with it but you can also put the engine on the front tyre which will motorize the Cycle.

The history of the Solex

The Solex is originally French, it was designed in 1942 by some French engineers and the name at that time was Velosolex. (Velo of bycycle). The solex was introduced in 1948 in the Netherlands. The first models costed about 375 guilders back then, which is about 185 euro's. It was quiet a amount of money for that time. The solex was a huge succes, especially among young women. During it's existence the plant was bought and sold by several companies.

At the end of the 60's MotoBecane bought the plant (MotoBecane is a French company too which made bicycles, motors etc). In 1983 Yamaha bought it from MotoBecane and in the 1988 the plant is closed.

In 2005 and the brand gets a new impuls abd they are building new solex'es even now. But the old ones are the most pretty and best.

Solex rides

So back to my story about the Solex's I saw. It turns out you can rent these mopeds in our village to have some great tours around Vorden. It is often used for a bachelor party, birthday or a company meetings. For 30 euro's per person you can have a 3 hour ride including classic jackets and helmets. Isn't that awesome. I am planning to organize such a tour for our "friends" club. Just to have a great time together :)

The funny thing was that I always thought the Solex was a Dutch invention, but it appears to be French :)

Have a great day !!

So this was like the original e-bike? Very cool! It makes me think of the Copenhagen wheel.

Yeah, I first heard about it on the TV show Weeds, but it apparently predates that.

Those guys are all over. Achterhoek, Twente... The Solex loves to eat tires though, I had a few in my day and they were very durable machines, it was supplying tires that was the hard part in a place where the Solex was never commonplace.
