The priceless value of a beehive

Let's do what bees do...

Mother Teresa of Calcutta said, regarding teamwork: "I do what you cannot do, and you do what I cannot do. Together we can do great things." With this phrase it is clear that teamwork is a work in which everyone participates and helps according to their potential. We all have weaknesses that can be solved with the virtues of others. In this type of work we can not only delegate tasks, but we can also divide it in how many members there are in the team and in this way not only make the work less strong, but we can see the results sooner and on a larger scale.

There is also an African proverb that says that if we want to go fast, we have to go alone; but if we want to go far, it is advisable to be accompanied. Almost every species on earth groups together to survive, reproduce and work. Joining together is a way of ensuring that they even stay on the land. From microscopic elements to large animals, they group together and work as a team for the good of their species.

An excellent example of teamwork is the work of bees. Bees are hard-working, noble animals who contribute to the environment and nature conservation. We all know that bees live in a beehive. In each beehive we will find three kinds of bees: the queen, who reproduces all the bees; the workers, who do the work of collecting and the male or drone, who fertilizes the queen. In the beehive, every work and function is important, because although it is true that the queen is the one who reproduces the species, the workers are the ones in charge of doing the work of protecting the beehive from external enemies. A curiosity, is that if the queen changes residence, everything else does too.

One thing that must be clear is that even if there is a queen in the hive, there is no monarchy there but the much loved democracy, since the queen is not above the others, but is at their service. And although it may seem incredible, it is the worker bees, who decide, raise and protect who is going to be their queen bee. All worker bees work for a common good, hence there is consensus in actions.

How good it is to remember some of these details when the terms communion, democracy and team are on the table. The bees that live in a hive are guided by a mysterious force of union that Mauricio Maeterlink called "The spirit of the hive", which makes them work tirelessly for the benefit of the whole community. Let us do as the bees do.
