Out of ideas

Maybe I'm getting old, but I'm getting pretty tired of the remakes and the sequels. I mean, truth be told the risk of ruining the now classics is too high, and the generation that would consume these movies, is not excited about these reheated plots.

Not to be insensitive, but time flies and with the exception of Tom Cruise, the roles tend to not be a good fit anymore. On top of that, most of what's being put out there is tainted with nostalgic fan service that tends to insult our intellectual inclinations.

Am I being too harsh? Are you excited for the remakes and the sequels 30 years later?

Is Hollywood just out of ideas?

Or am I just becoming the old man who screams to little kids to get off my lawn.

I can't even remember the last time a completely original script was a blockbuster.

There is a certain sense to it though. Old stories have established audiences and are much less risky from a financial point of view.

There is also a theory that the current spate of superhero movies being commercially successful come from a general feeling of powerlessness. The movies allow those people to vicariously gain the feeling of power in their own lives. I think there is something to that.

But yes, Hollywoo is out of ideas for the big screen.

There is a lot of talent and creativity out in the world. Unfortunately, Hollywood is set up to ignore all that and give people jobs through nepotism. It's not what you know, it's who you know.

Decentralized production in cinema will create incredible stories with amazing talent no one has ever heard of. I have a feeling they'll be using Swarm intelligence to cast actors and create content in certain situations. The future is going to be real weird.

John Taylor Gatto had a great phrase: Genius is as common as dirt.

This is for sure, and I agree with you, films that are being shot nowadays have few life ideas!

Yep, I completely agree! Most fall short due to relying on the coattails of the success of previous/original films. Most of the time using regurgitated ideas and have a general lack of creativity and uniqueness.

Well, it might sound like a fetish but I would like to see Tom Cruise making up with Kelly Mcgillis now.

I think it depends for me. Often I find remakes and especially sequels to be terrible. Sequels have a tendency to always try to go beyond what was done originally which usually results in over the top action scenes that are completely unrealistic. Or they try to add bigger and better characters and ideas that often do not fit in with the original story. Sequels that are based on books tend to be a little better because they do not have that over the top quality to them and everything seems to fit within the story universe.
On the other hand I do beleive that some remakes work. Sometimes the new cinema technology can make a real difference, especially in the cases of sci fi movies. Many remakes fail though because they try to appeal to the new generation by speeding things up and adding more action, color, and anger rather than focussing on good dialogue, character development and plot.

I think the bigger problem is that at the moment the film industry is focused on the formula that yields money: reboots and remakes.

Unfortunately, the original ideas are being swallowed up (and yielding weak financial returns to the studios). So, it's not that they don't exist... But the fact that they aren't being valued as they should be.

However, on the other hand, I find interesting the idea of revisiting some classics, like the recent The Lion King. I wrote a review and I'm incredibly pleased with the final result. No, you're right. It sure feels like Hollywood is running out of original ideas. This glut of remakes is not doing anyone anything resembling a service.

You are not alone. I don't mind a remake but recently it is hard to find a film that is original. We need a balance. We need more creativity. Smaller budgets which allow for some experimentation. Ugh, so much junk in the theaters. Got to support the quality films being released. Cheers.
