DIY Woodworking - Small Ohia Bowl - Big Island of Hawaii

PSX_20191008_051553.jpg

I carved this bowl on the last day when we were on the Big Island out of an Ohia branch with a big crack in it. Normally I would fill the crack before I worked on the wood but I did not have time so I carved the rough shape out before we had to fly back to Honolulu for work. When I got back to Honolulu I filled the crack with some epoxy resin that I dyed purple.

When I finished work yesterday I sanded the bowl out with my orbital sander and then wet sanded it with 300, 600, and 1000 grit sand paper. I no longer use water to wet sand. Now I use the food safe wood oil and it smooths and finishes the wood at the same time.

I am pretty happy with how it turned out. I am learning more every time I work on the wood.
