Aquilegia ( columbine) is a genus of about 60-70 species of perennial plants.
The name Aquilegia is derived from the Latin word for eagle (aquila), because of the shape of the flower petals which resemble an eagle's claw.
Aquilegia grows spontaneously but of course, it is their cultivation as an ornamental plant that has made them very famous.
