What is Sensory Overload and How to Avoid the ‘Overwhelmed Life’? Part #2

Hello, dear friends!

In our last blog post, we explained the idea of sensory overload as a social context within our modern society.

A lot of people deal with a lot of things simultaneously, and that practically drains all their energy and divides it into things that are otherwise unimportant.

What is the result of this? Utter failure when it comes to focusing on something and shining in the competitive scene of society.

There is a powerful exercise that we should all do if we are able to.

Choose any random hour of the day.

You could choose the early hours of night, since it is supposed to be the time of the day when you rest for a bit.

Write down every thought that comes to your mind and everything that you do.

Even if it is the smallest thing imaginable. If you pick your phone up, write it down. If you pick it up again the next minute, write it down again.

Consciously monitor three hours of your day and write everything down.

The result is going to make you rethink every move you’ve ever made in your life.

When you are confronted with the sheer volume of everything that you do or think about in that three hours, you are going to freak out.

How is it possible to even carry such weight?

Well, you have been unconsciously doing that for the past few years, perhaps even longer.

Now, you have a choice.

Are you going to let everything keep distracting you from your sole purpose and reason for existence, or are you going to take steps and reduce your sensory overload?

This is where it gets tricky.

It takes a special kind of courage and determination to reduce the amount of shouting and screaming that is coming at you from all sides.

But doing it will inevitably grant you with the amount of time and energy that you’ve always need to perform the things that you’ve always wanted.

Your life is your life, do not live it in the shadow of the expectations that other people might have from you.

Be brave enough to say no to the raging storm outside and find yourself again in the calmness of the solitude that follows…!

@chbartist It is so difficult to say no, but to take control over our objectives we need to learn to do that. Focusing on what we do, it is a good beginning to the success.

I have had a journal for most of my professional career and I use it gauge these metrics to ensure that I can seek a proper balances of delegating and assuming work as well as keeping the appropriate track to be accountable for the responsibilities. The goal is to see it reduce over time but it is often a true challenge.

it is a matter of assessing the actions to be executed; perform in the first instance the urgent and important; the important actions to schedule and resolve them according to the availability of time; those that can be delegated will be delegated; and finally the one that does not matter should be discarded. All the above according to the objectives set. We must always have objectives, otherwise there will be nothing to organize.

This is a very interesting post. I wrote a blog on this same thing quite a while ago but it's not on the Steem chain it's on my website www.karolien-thereslifeafterkids.com although I might move it over here at some point. I'm still fairly new year and I really enjoy the posts and people I've found here so far. Sensory overload is a real thing these days and I've found that it leads to anxiety, something that I've never suffered from before but you're right in saying that life is way too overwhelming these days. Thank you for sharing this with us.
