Happy National Beach Day!
Today is your chance to celebrate National Beach Day. Started in 2014, this US holiday occurs each August 30 to raise our awareness of the beauty of beaches while also calling attention to keeping them clean and safe.
On this day we are encouraged to participate in cleaning up beaches worldwide in order to save the lives of ocean mammals and sea birds and well as keep the scene pristine. Every day, animals are killed by fishing line, plastic, cans, oil spills, and other trash, so any help is better than none.
Here’s how you can help keep our beaches the way they came:
- when your time at the beach is over, leave nothing behind.
- keep animals from getting trapped or tangled in trash, on land and in the water.
- call attention to any issues you see and can’t handle to life guards or animal rescue.
It’s best to celebrate this holiday by going to the beach if you can! It doesn't matter if it is a beach at an ocean or at a lake. Go for a swim or simply enjoy some time on the sand. Have a party or picnic, and take photographs of the wildlife, sand, and water.
Besides relaxing at the beach, take a bag or two and clean up garbage and debris if you see it. Then the beach will be cleaner and animals will be safer when you leave.
How will you celebrate National Beach Day? Here are some videos to entice you.
What would the beach be without The Beach Boys? Watch them barely lip sync in this funny clip with great costumes and dancing.
