During his tenure, Sweet was also known for ruling in 1988 that federal sentencing guidelines run afoul of the constitution and for voicing opposition to the war on drugs and mandatory minimum sentences.
Sweet told PBS in an interview that he long advocated that drugs should be dealt with like a public health issue, rather than using criminal penalties to deal with the issue.
“The idea of using the criminal law to deal with something which is basically a health problem, basically an education problem, I think that that’s a bad mistake in public policy,” Sweet said.
